2006 Southeastern Territorial Gathering

We held our gathering at Buckingham Historic Village, in Buckingham County, Virginia from October 11th through October 15th, 2006.  We had 6 members, and 9 non-members participating.  Most of them encamped for the duration.

Historic Buckingham Inc. piggybacked a "Colonial Camp" event onto our Gathering and provided 13 volunteers over the course of the event to interpret their historic buildings, sell, and serve food, and to play historic games.  One hundred twenty walk in visitors signed our guest book.  We estimate that over 150 visitors attended the event.

The Buckingham chapter of the Jamestown 2007 commemoration provided monetary sponsorship.  This paid for hooters, canvas shelters, and the camp feast, with no out of pocket expenses for the organizers, and also allowed us to waive the camp fees entirely.

The participants depicted the early 17th century, the 1750's, the Revolution, and early 19th century western fur trade.  Both members and non-members provided activities such as a woodswalk shooting competition, a squirrel hunt, a native plant seminar, storytelling, local history lectures, and first person interpretations. Historic Buckingham graciously allowed us the use of their buildings.  The woodstove in the 1850's Post Office provided comfort for the after hours music and merriment.

Our attendance, both participants and visitors, was affected by competition from the Virginia State Muzzleloading Championship, Martins Station, and a Civil War reenactment all being held on the same weekend.  Gas prices, car trouble, and an overseas deployment were quoted to us by people who wanted to come but could not.

An honorary membership was bestowed on Harlan Austin for the invaluable assistance he provided the Virginia State Rep during the planning and implementation of the Gathering.  Membership applications are in the works for one walk in visitor and one Historic Buckingham volunteer, as well as for at least 3 people who were unable to attend, but contacted us for information.

Historic Buckingham Inc.  has requested that we hold the 2007 Territorial Gathering at their village as a part of their commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Virginia.  We will take them up on that offer and are working on an early October 2007 date.
