KY-CoHT Fall Gathering - Oct. 10-12, 2003
Our fall weekend trek/camp is in Nicholasville (near Lexington), KY.
This weekend is open to all CoHT members and guests (or potential members).
This will not be juried, but you will be expected to attempt to outfit
yourself in pre-1840 (most of us will be pre-1790). This is a good chance
to learn and experience some river and woods skills. There will also be
an opportunity to ride horses.
Please keep in mind that we are flexible, if you want to come but are
apprehensive about anything, we'll work something out!!!
Expect moderate strenuous. You will be expected to pack in your full
gear. That may be by canoe and by shanks mare, no more than a mile or
so, one way. Canoeing will be paddling downriver about 6 miles. The
emphasize for the weekend will be the frontier river/woodland scout
experience.
Registration fees are as follows:
There will be NO hunting or live rounds considering this is a tactical.
If you have any questions or would like to help out with this event, give
me a call at (859)271-2918 or email me at jhagee2@frontierfolk.net. Remember,
the CoHT is an organization run by the members. The more people we
have helping, the more ideas we can accomplish at this event!
Our EVENT SITE is located about 1/2 an hour S. of Lexington on the
Kentucky River in rural Jessamine County. It is actually just a few
miles downriver from Fort Boonesborough. Kenton and Boone would have
canoed in the same place and manner in which we will be
travelling/camping. "Boone's Cave" is a mile from the highway
turnoff.
You will need to bring WATER or a filter (or I'm sure you can share
one). There are RESTROOMS and SHOWERS available at the parking lot (I
better not catch any hard-core TREKKERS taking A SHOWER!!!).
You will need to bring your SHELTER or blankets to rig a shelter in
the woods.
REGISTRATION is around 5pm on Friday. It is OK to arrive before that.
Here is a
caver's event
I held on the same property last fall, some nice
photos of the area we'll be in.
This is main web site for
Sugar Creek Resort.
It is called a resort, but this is no foo-foo resort! It is a
primitive camp/outfitter. They do have some cabins in the works. You
may want to bring the family back in the future.
Here are directions
to Sugar Creek Resort. My cell phone is (859)230-5194.
Event Schedule
Alternate Schedule (if you arrive late or do not canoe.)
RIVER TACTICAL will allow us to experience frontier travel
under similar conditions. Many chose to travel at night to avoid
encounters with hostiles. We will assume all riverside camps and other
river crafts and parties to be hostile and to be avoided. We will
strive to be quiet, quick and safe (dry!). We will not want to bunch
up, but will need to stay in contact with each other.
WOODLAND TACTICAL will test your woodland and team skills. Tracking,
stealth, mental endurance, setting and avoiding ambush, dealing with
weather conditions, trailing the foe, hiding from same. We will
attempt a scenario that fosters development of the 18th century mind-set.
OTHER ACTIVITIES may include trading or a round-robin. We may decide
to have a community kettle on Saturday night. You may rent trail
horses or canoes at standard fees
through SCR (I'm trying to arrange a discount for our group). Be
aware, their horseback riding are on hilly woodland trails, not a
flat track or meadow.
CHILDREN: Are welcome. They may not be able to participate in
everything. We may be able to arrange some activities depending on who
we have. Mature teens and youngsters with parent's permission and
guidance can participate in most activities. Consider this a
family-friendly event.
PETS: Dogs are allowed. Since there are horses on the property,
your dog will have to be under control at all times whether on
leash or otherwise.
GOALS: for this weekend include getting comfortable with 18th century
River/canoe travel, tactical experience and getting to know other Ohio River
Valley trekkers.
RIVER TRAVEL: If you are not used to the river, we will hit no rapids.
We will pair up experienced canoers with inexperienced. Although I do
not anticipate overturning canoes, we must prepare for that! Make sure
everything is tied down and in bundles. Try to waterproof. The water
will be cold, there will be some current, especially near submerged
trees and outer turns of the river. If you go in, do not panic.
Clothing will get heavy real fast. Rescuers should extend a paddle,
not jump in. We will travel in canoe pairs for safety. You should wear
a life jacket.
