A Big howdy to you all and welcome to Our camp,
welcome all new members and all our renewing members!
As most of you know I have excepted the Position of State Rep. for the
COHT , I will try to pick up where our Good friend Dave McGee left off. And Yes
he left me some mighty big moccasins to fill ,so don't be alarmed when I don't!
I see no big change in the way our chapter is run, as the Capt. will oversee me
and try to help keep up his standards! Good luck Dave! I really would like to
see us out in the woods More,as that is what some of our members have been
telling me ! When I signed up with COHT a few years back, it was for the
trekking and friendship, people who would help me on my quest of finding my way
back to the 1700's!he guys were great, but it seemed like everyone wanted to go
to a show or a trade-fair or rondezvous! Rendezvous are fine ,if thats your
thing and they are a good thing to do in the summer's heat. But I would still
like to see us trekking ,when we can.(C.O.H."Trekkers") When you join a bowling
league you bowl don't you??? So with a little help from you, we can get us back
on trek, so to say! Getting us out there is every one's job , so please do your
part! It sure is easy when every one does a little than one trying to do it
All.So if you have a trekk or camp ,you want to set up and need some help
planning it, get with me or McGee and we will "git it done!"We would like to
have a least a couple weeks notice so we can get our insurance forms in! So We
will be having some trekks and hunting camps this year and I would like everyone
to be aware of our Camp and trekking safety rules. Please take the time to
reveiw them, they are posted on the COHT web page, all the stuff is mostly
common sense And yes Bushwacker there is going to be a test!
There is a few of you I have not met and I would sure enjoy hearing from
You! If you aren't too buzy one night pick up the phone and give me a hollar and
we can break the ice.
Soooooo a little on me, Last year I retired from the City of Cleveland
after 31+ years of service. . I went through some health issues ,(of coarse)
right during hunting season and I had to sit out and try to regroup! And Yes I
am whinning, first time in about 20 years or so that I had to miss early muzzle
loading deer season!I guess looking back at some of the photos of some of our
early hunts ,althought most of them were modern hunting camps, layed down the
foundations of where I am headed now. I wished I had kept a journal back
then, which I will touch on in a furture article. I guess our camp in 99 was the
beginning of our no return, there we were in our 1770's camp right in the middle
of all these modern camps!Yep ,the bug had bit us!
I have been muzzleloading since the early 80's,when I bought me a
"Hawkins Gun",thanks to Jeremiah Johnson! I also enjoy Hunting the HARD WAY with
a Longbow, my Great Uncle kinda showed be the way home,as he had been shooting
one most of his life time! Old BushWacker got me started with this hobby, with
his Mark Baker tapes and me lifting his Muzzleloader and On The Trail magazines,
but don't tell him !! Tom and me went to Prickett's Fort in 98 and listen to a
magnificent John Curry sell this life style to us! We have been with the COHT
since 99 I guess, back when Mr. Robert Reynolds was Ohio State Rep. Bob and
Randy Sweet was at Pricketts Fort School of the Longhunter and sold us on the
COHT!
Speaking of Lefty, we got to see him and his two side kicks Randy Sweet
and Scotty Thornberry ( x Great Lakes Gov) out at the Fremont Trade Fair along
with Dave Felter,Mr. & Mrs. Butch Ebersole and (our x Great Lakes Governor)
Mr.& Mrs John Covert. I can't tell you all how glad I was to see ya all ! It
was a long hard winter for me, sitting at a awful quiet house(no kids) and my
dogs can't carry on a good story fer too long! So now if We can just get this
group to lead us out in the woods every thing will be swell! Take the point
Lefty and show us the way, will ya? Warty watch our back door! Well hopefully
this fall will find us all together in the woods at one of our fall hunting
camps !
All went well down at our Ohio gathering at the Creek ,althought
attendence was a little on the lite side and we missed a few of you but I won't
dwell on it . We wish to thank Shelley McClanahan for hosting the event !
Shelley and Linda of CCPV are the real gems of the village and we would like to
throw them support when ever we can! So let's try and meet down at MayFair this
May 20-22,what say you? I also would like to thank every one who did show up and
a big Thanks to Our Mister Weaser who goes out of his way to see every one gets
a belly full of food ,what a guy!!!
Don't forget to check the COHT boards on the web pages and see whats
going on ! Please git a hold of me with your stories, recipes, ideas and treks ,
don't count on Me to do it all ,Other wise you might be doing what Blackie
does, which sometimes ain't much ( ask my Wife!!) Yes, I am Retired . So ya all
see, we need some writers to help with this newsletter,to make it worth
anything! Thats just 4 times a year and thats not alot,I need your thoughts on
things that would interest you the reader.
Looking for anything connected with is great hobby, sport or life style we
try to live! Hunting ,firearms, woodscraft, historical heritage, book
reviews,Indian Lore-- well you get my drift, its wide open folks!
This is a member driven "vehicle" and I really need YOUR contributions,
or Else you will be condemned to read the Ramblings of a Fool !!! So Guys and
Girls let me hear you say "You Musta wanta It"!
We will have some issues to vote on with the national meeting just coming to a close and you will want to keep up with whats been said . There is mail in ballots coming in our July edition of the TTG that you will have to decide on and your votes will count! They will have to be all in by Sept.1st. I will try and do my best to keep you informed. There is some talk about having the Ohio mail in shooting contest again ,so I need Your thoughts on it. What to do??? There is another issue that came up, new this year ,the early muzzleloader hunt in Oct. will be by "Permit Only", per the Web Site! Hunters interrested in participating will need to submit a controlled hunt application during the application period, June 1- July 31,2005. Now to me this sounds like
a BIG set back to us who hunts this season, if I'm reading this right!!! I guess we should attend the Wildlife Councils held in March and help keep an eye on things! It futher states A specific number of permits will be issued. The permit issued will designate whether the hunter can kill an antlered or antlerless deer. This hunt previously was for Bucks only. The Early muzzleloader deer hunt is for Oct. 24-29 Does that mean we are all going to get some kinda permit,if we apply??? Please check this out on our Division of Wildlife web site!
In closing I would like to say its never too late to
volunteer to help keep this membership up and running ! But there again all we
can do is "Offer" ,its really up to You the Member on what becomes of your trip.
You can sit on the back porch and read what others are doing or get on the trail
and make your own history! P.S. Put a little prayer in for our service guys and
gals serving Over seas! See ya in the woods!
Your most humble servant,
Blackie
