Antlerless Deer Hunt Report

We had three participants for the antlerless deer hunt in December. Myself, Tom Hansen and John Meyer. Thanks to Tom for getting us a place to go and again for finding a new place when the old place fell through at the last minute. Instead of north Missouri we ended up just south of Kansas City. Unfortunately , Tom was I’ll and I ended up dropping him back at home. However John and I had a good time we camped two nights and hunted the days. John was the only one to see a deer and it had about 1 too many antlers to shoot. I bagged a squirrel.

The first night got down to about 15 degrees and we were blessed with 8 in. of snow on the ground. I found my bed roll a little chilly at that temp so I sat up and fed the fire all night. John was using a small self inflating pad and he said it made the difference. I’ll find out, I picked one up for Christmas. It should roll up nice and tight in my bed roll. I’m feel I can justify its use since cutting branches (or finding branches) in many of the places I camp is just not an option. The second night was about 35 degrees and I was plenty warm even without the fire. I did have to dry my evening footwear and that was very helpful. Due to the snowmelt my  snowpacks had gotten very wet. So I took out the inner layers and dried them before bed. Being dry was a good thing.

We’ll be looking for a new place for this event next year, If you have a place let me know.

Hercules Glades Trek Report

I had to pull the plug on this one late in the game. The weather just was not going to cooperate and I was the only participant left. So I decided I did not want to drive 5 hours to sit in the rain by myself when I could sit in the rain at home. I’m looking to reschedule soon, like late January early February.

National Gathering

Don’t forget, the National gathering is coming up in April (April 18-22). You can check the website for info on what is being planned. I know they are planning the canoe trek on the Missouri again and this was a really good time last year. Looks like we will again be having members of the South central Territory together for a potluck. Thanks to Tater for doing so much leg work.

Squirrel Hunting

I got to go do a bit of squirrel hunting with my flintlocks. The first foray was on the Kansas side of the line and ended up turning into a six hour game of pitch next to a wood stove while it poured cold rain outside. I did take one while deer hunting with my fifty and yes there was something left and yes it was worth eating, which I did. Still haven’t had any luck finding the buggers with my thirty six in hand. I took a couple of long walks in the conservation area just south of us and only saw one squirrel. I only saw two other hunters out and as I was walking up the trail to pass them on the way home I noticed they looked a bit familiar.  It was fellow COHT member John Meyer and his son. They had their dog out chasing bunnies and squirrels and had not seen much more than myself.  We visited for a while before I escorted their dog back to the truck while they pushed on a bit more.
