CoHT's President
Greetings from the Two Rivers of the Last Great Frontier

Scouts have passed this way.

Dear Friends:

Please accept my compliments and best wishes that you and those you hold most dear are well. It is mid-summer here in the “Great Land”, and a bit harrowing as wildfires have been burning throughout the Interior of Alaska, some quite near my own house. For the moment all seems to be safe, but things were a bit tense for a while. Up here it is the season of canoe trips, catching voracious arctic grayling, trout and salmon and of course the ever popular Alaska mosquito slap-dance as we bask under the midnight sun.

We had a wonderful turn-out for our annual gathering at Fort Osage, Missouri in April. The weather was more reminiscent of summer than spring, with daytime highs in the 80s. We enjoyed some great seminars, a most entertaining evening at a tavern hosted by Kathy Johnson and Ed Wilde, and the company of the finest people it has ever been my pleasure to meet. We conducted quite a lot of business at the annual meeting, including the following:

- Amended the constitution to incorporate a new “Youth” membership category.
- Amended the constitution to allow members absent from the annual meeting to cast absentee ballots on motions brought before the membership at that meeting.
- Amended the constitution to remove the office of UK/Europe Territorial Governor from our Board of Directors.
- Approved a motion allowing copies of the Time Traveler’s Gazette to be sold to non-members “over the counter” as it were.
- Established the 3rd weekend of April as the standard date for our national gathering each year, and Fort Osage as the venue.

In the last issue of the Gazette I reported that a safety committee had been appointed to recommend standardized safety rules for CoHT tactical events. As the team worked the project they felt they needed to expand the mission to include most types of treks and gatherings. They have submitted their recommendations and the Executive Board and Board of Territorial Governor are currently reviewing their suggestions. I’d like to extend a special thank-you to all who served on the committee for working so hard to complete this important project.

Just as the crews of wildland firefighters are busy fighting literal brushfires around my house, we at CoHT have been battling some figurative brushfires of our own. Dan Lambert is trying hard to get the Gazette back on schedule. Meanwhile though we’ve lost our membership director. During the gathering at Fort Osage membership director J.P. Finn was called away due to a family emergency. This has resulted in some delays in processing membership applications and other paperwork. On July 8th JP submitted his resignation as membership director. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused, but let us also remember that family must always come first. Please keep J.P. and his family members in your thoughts and prayers. He has provided excellent service over the past three years and is to be commended for his efforts.

We are now calling for nominations for that office. The general role of the membership director is to ensure that memberships are properly recorded on our official rosters and that members receive the many and various benefits of membership to which they are entitled. The membership director of CoHT shall be responsible for the following:

- Receives applications for membership, recording the name and contact information of the new or renewing member(s) in our national roster and forwarding payment of dues to the treasurer.
- Insures new and renewing members receive a membership card and other materials concerning their membership status and policies of the CoHT (Membership Packet) in a timely manner.
- Maintains the official roster of membership and periodically publishes the roster to the Communications Director, Territorial Governors and others as requested.
- Informs territorial governors and state chapter representatives of new or renewed members within their territory and state within a reasonable time so that those members may receive their newsletters and other benefits of membership.
- Serves as an advocate of the members during executive board meetings and proceedings.
- Works in conjunction with the vice president to ensure that members receive the benefits of membership provided by territorial governors and state chapter representatives.

The term of office is four years and all current members of CoHT are eligible to run for this office.

As you may be aware, the election for vice-president has been delayed due to some mailing problems with last quarter’s issue of the Gazette, compounded by JP’s resignation. We will tabulate the ballots as quickly as possible in order to fill this important office. I assure you that the Executive Board members are as anxious to fill this office as quickly as we can. I am currently trying to carry out the duties of that office and I am greatly looking forward to announcing a winner soon.

In that capacity I am pleased to announce that Bryan Nye of Pennsylvania has accepted the position of Northeast Territorial Governor. He has hit the ground a-runnin’ by appointing new state chapter representatives for New York and Pennsylvania. John D (aka “Rifleman”) has taken the job in the Empire State and Jack “Bull” Walker is serving our members in the Keystone State. Please help support these great volunteers, and all of our volunteer office holders as they do their level best to serve you.

Please also accept my thanks to each and every CoHT member for your continued patience and support.

Your Most Humble and Obedient Servant:
Swanny
